Mac Jones came to Alabama back in the class of 2017 as a 6-foot-2, 180-pound three-star quarterback from Jacksonville, Fla.

Jones redshirted in 2017 and played in 14 games in 2018 when Alabama still had Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts at quarterback. When Hurts moved on after the 2018 season, Jones became Alabama’s backup quarterback to Tagovailoa in 2019.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2019, Jones appeared in 12 games — making four starts — after an injury to Tagovailoa. Jones more than held his own, completing 97 of 141 passes for 1,503 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions.

While Jones was terrific in relief, Alabama was still Tagovailoa’s team.

Tagovailoa moved onto the NFL in 2020, and Jones was now the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback.

He’s been so good; he is considered one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy, completing 78.5 percent of his passes for 2,196 yards with 16 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Jones, in 2020, has arguably been better than Tagovailoa was in 2019.

ESPN recently listed the top breakout players in college football for 2020, and Jones was No. 2 on the list.

Jones has had a great game each time he has taken the field this season — he has earned a PFF grade north of 82.0 in each of his six starts. Sure, the offense he is in, and the supporting cast he has are extremely favorable, but when looking at the things a quarterback can control, Jones is still at the top of the position. His negatively graded throw rate is the second best in the FBS, behind only that of Fields. At this point, there’s an argument to be made that Jones is the front-runner for the 2020 Heisman.
